On 19th May some BAS members met to paint in an old cider orchard at Stoney Stratton in the Mendips…
Lesley Beazer kindly invited us to paint in her lovely 7 acre cider orchard while the blossom was out. A lovely day together as we painted and sketched amongst a mixture of gnarled 80 year old cider apple trees along with younger eating apple trees. As an added enticement, Black and Moorit Shetland sheep wandered among the trees. Jane Barnard
Wire & Mixed media Sculpture Workshop
A “real life” workshop was held on the 20th and 21st of May, at Hadspen Village Hall with Melanie Deegan – a well known sculptor based in the West Country.

Members prepared drawings and reference images beforehand and then, using varied sorts of wire, aluminium wire mesh, silicon moulds and other incredibly named and versatile materials such as “Pavapol”, ( a kind of fast drying white glue which can be mixed with pigment inks to give colour to a piece ) “Crystacal”, ( an alpha grade plaster ) and “Scrim”, ( a sort of cotton bandage, well known to textile artists ) to name a few, created some very beautiful, and in some cases quite “quirky” pieces of sculpture. This was after just two days!
Melanie brought many interesting and exciting materials to use during the workshop as well as some enchanting examples of her own work.
Her calm guidance, encouragement and expertise was very much appreciated throughout and she attended to everyone’s needs without fuss or flurry.

We were very saddened to hear of the death of Tessa McIntyre in early February. Tessa was a fine and highly respected painter and printmaker. Her work has been a key feature in many exhibitions in this region for many years. Tessa was a great supporter of the Bruton Art Society and had many friends there. She will be much missed by all who knew her.
We hear there will be an exhibition of her work in Shaftesbury at a later date and we will post details when we know more.
The Bruton Art Society will mount a special display of a selection of her work at the Annual Exhibition in August.
