The American artist John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) was one of the most prominent artists in Britain in the early twentieth century. Trained in Paris, he combined a thorough knowledge of French impressionist and realist art with a respect for English traditional art. He was considered the “leading portrait painter of his generation” for his evocations of Edwardian era luxury. The art of Sargent is exceptional in its individual style and innovation. We will be taking a detailed look at this prolific artist’s paintings, drawings and watercolours. He is best known for his portraits, but his other work is far wider and more fascinating than his usual title of a ‘portraitist’ would lead us to believe.
